Mastic asphalt

Mastic asphalt is a mixture of a bitumen binder, stone filler and mineral powder heated and mixed in the hot state. See also Mastic asphalt.

Mastic asphalt has wet consistency as it contains a larger quantity of the binder compared to the common contractible asphalt.

The characteristic features of the mastic road asphalt mix are the following properties:

  • high frost resistance and the possibility of laying all the year round irrespective of the air temperature (the minimal laying temperature is characterized by the threshold of down to −10°С and is related to the comfort of performance of the work by the man at negative temperatures);
  • the service life can be 20-30 years (depending on the load intensity);
  • does not need compaction (no need for rollers);
  • resistant to salt water (salt) and chemicals;
  • ideal for laying on complex geometric surfaces and reliefs;
  • possibility of producing colored coverings of a wide color range;
  • increased strength, abrasion resistance and heat resistance;
  • the availability of the fire safety certificate meeting the requirements of G2, V2, RP1, T1 allows use of the mastic road asphalt mix as finishing floor pavements of underground and multilevel covered parkings and floors of industrial buildings (is used without any special  fire proofing);
  • waterproof (does not absorb moisture and does not swell out due to lack of pores);
  • environmentally friendly, does not contain admixtures harmful for people and the environment;
  • resistant to fungi and microorganisms (decay resistant); permanent impact of a condensate and moisture is possible (is used in damp and wet rooms; for example, floor coverings of shower rooms);
  • visco-elastic and shear-resistant, abrasion-proof, has damping capacity;
  • ensures good adhesion of wheels of the moving vehicle even in case of a wet covering;
  • resistant to the limited impact of fuel and oil (an advantage when used on parking and storage areas);
  • can be used as a covering for heated surfaces both in the open air and indoors in underlayments and finishing coverings;
  • due to the unique internal structure the road asphalt mix and the covering made from it practically make no noise when motorcars move on it;
  • can be laid on sloping surfaces (an advantage for surfacing of inclined trestles and approach ramps);
  • easy to operate, simple to clean; if required the mastic asphalt is easy to wash or sweep; no special detergents or special equipment are needed to clean coverings made from the mastic road asphalt mix;
  • if required the covering is easily restored;
  • the covering can be subject to loads already within 6-12 hours depending on the preset parameters rheological properties of the selected type of the mix;
  • replaces the cement-concrete lining;
  • makes less noise;
  • is not conducive to sparking in case metal and other items are dropped on it;
  • ideally suitable for manual laying on complex geometric surfaces;
  • as distinguished from concrete coverings no dust forms in the process of operation on the surface of the covering made from mastic asphalt; that is there is no need for constant application of special compounds for dedusting, which ensures considerable economy of money for maintenance and cleaning of such coverings; the non-dusting surface of mastic asphalt is ensured by the specific feature of the binding components in its composition.

Besides, the mastic asphalt used in floor coverings in rooms and parkings has the following physical-mechanical characteristics (at 20°С):

  • can withstand a concentrated load without deformation from 20 to 40 kg/cm2;
  • has a relative tensile strength at flexure from 0.04 to 0.07;
  • bending value from 7 to 12 MPa with the strain rate of 3 mm/min;
  • the line expansion coefficients of mastic asphalt for the temperature range from 20°С to 30°С are 30-35×10-6;
  • water saturation is less than 0.2% by weight within 24 hours;
  • the laydown temperature is from 180°С to 240°С.

Depending on the expected loads due to changes of the temperature and transport loads it is necessary to select a rational hardness class developed at ABZ-1 OJSC. The standard of the organization STO 03218295-03.01-2007 “Hot mastic road asphalt mixes and asphalt on their basis. Technical requirements” with regard to the technical requirements to the coverings are oriented towards German codes as well as standards of many other European countries. The STO has been approved by Saint Petersburg Zonal Research and Design Institute of Residential-Civil Buildings OJSC (SPbZNI&PI, formerly LenZNIIEP) as well as by the industry-specific agency of state power, the Committee for City Improvement and Roads of Saint Petersburg, has received a favourable response from design and contract paving organizations.
